YOUTH WORK IN SCHOOLS: School's not out

The Government's green paper proposes making schools a hub of services for young people. Henrietta Bond talks to two schools in Lancashire about a project that has demonstrated how integral youth work can be

In its green paper, Every Child Matters, the Government is proposing to address this issue, by making schools (along with Sure Start centres and primary care health centres) a hub for developmental and support services for young people.

Traditionally, there has been a clear delineation between schools and youth services, but an innovative project in Nelson, Lancashire, has demonstrated how youth work based in schools can develop the skills and self-esteem of individual young people, and improve the ethos of the whole school.

The Girls on Film project was developed as a partnership between Edge End High School and Walton High School in Nelson, the Five Wards Arts and Cultural Project, run by Mid-Pennine Arts, and The Prince's Trust mentoring project in east Lancashire.
