Royal youth work: The royal connection

From The Duke of Edinburgh's Award to The Prince's Trust, the royal family's interest in youth work brings many benefits, as Henrietta Bond discovers.

Many organisations would give their right arms to have a royal patron, but organisations working with young people might question the relevance. Wouldn't young people rather have David Beckham or Beyonce fronting their youth group?

John Bateman, chief executive of UK Youth, says it's not an either/or situation of celebrities or royals. "Nigel Mansell is our president and he plays a different role to Princess Anne, our patron, getting involved in fundraising and group visits. A royal patron brings a particular focus to the organisation's work. It's unique to the UK and young people are intelligent and value that."
