Queen Elizabeth II’s husband of 73 years died peacefully at Windsor Castle on Friday 9 April, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

Prince Philip founded the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award for boys in February 1956 in a bid to support young men’s development.

“In the post-war era, His Royal Highness wanted to bridge the gap between leaving formal education at 15 and entering into National Service at 18,” the DofE charity's website states.

In 1957 the scheme was extended to girls with the DofE Award for young people aged 14 to 21 launched in 1969.
