The charity’s annual statistics revealed that young people’s volunteering hours leapt by 33% to more than 4.7mn in the year to March 2024, as 30% of 14-year-olds in the UK started their Bronze award.

Figures also highlighted that the DofE has invested more than £3mn to support young people and organisations that otherwise would not have been in a position to participate in the award.

They signal the end of the third year of the DofE’s five-year strategy, launched in 2019, which aimed to widen access and remove barriers to participation. According to the figures, 88,530 young people from ethnic minority backgrounds and 25,691 with additional needs started their award in 2023/24.
