6 mins read
Over the next four years, all 150 English youth services will be evaluated. Henrietta Bond tracks the inspection of Dorset Youth Service to find out what is involved

A youth worker might have inspectors attend his or her club, take notes, and talk to the young people, without knowing quite how this visit fits in to the inspection. Young People Now tracked Dorset Youth Service as it underwent an inspection earlier this year.

Countdown

2 Feb Dorset receives notification of inspection, including a handbook and copy of the draft inspection framework. Anthony May, the then head of youth and community service, says: "I immediately wrote to managers, staff and stakeholders about when the inspection would be and what we were expected to do in the meantime."

12 Feb Senior managers meet to explain the framework and process of inspections to staff. The service has to prepare a self-assessment to submit to Ofsted by 22 March. Mick Hogben, senior youth and community service manager, says: "There's trepidation about the inspection itself, but staff are keen to demonstrate the things they do well."
