Things to do - Create a youth inspection project

2 mins read
All too often it's adults who assess services and decide what young people need. But increasingly, youth services and projects are realising the benefits of getting young people involved in the inspection process.

Hackney Borough Council started its young inspector project 18 months ago in response to suggestions made by young people in a wide-ranging consultation. The young people argued that they should be continuously involved in inspecting services and projects to make sure they meet their needs.

In October 2007, the project manager set about recruiting 33 young inspectors from Hackney Youth Parliament, the youth scrutiny board, youth offending team and youth board, among others.

As a result, young people in Hackney now pose as new youth club members to assess the service they receive, and also take part in pre-announced inspections. Their recommendations are then passed on to those responsible for the youth services so changes can be made.
