But projects around the country are giving the youth of today a chance to protect the environment for tomorrow.
The Waterways Action Squad, set up in June 2009 by the Waterways Trust and British Waterways, works with 16- to 25-year-olds in and around Liverpool. Lucie Unswoth, youth development manager at Waterways Trust, says: "Our project is all-encompassing. Volunteers from around the North West can engage in every aspect of the preservation and development of canals and rivers in the area."
Volunteers are currently working on the Leeds-to-Liverpool canal. A typical day includes litter-monitoring and wildlife watch, customer service activities such as walking tours, or promotional activities such as organising events.
