Youth Services: Union threatens to strike in Liverpool

1 min read

Community and Youth Workers' Union representatives are warning the council that its plan to replace youth workers' terms and conditions with standard local authority terms in April will breach the national agreement between youth work unions and employers.

The controversial move is planned as part of a restructuring of the local authority's youth service, which will involve new job descriptions being issued to all youth workers (YPN, 9-15 November, p5). Bones of contention in the plan would include less leave time under the new terms and less favourable salary increments.

The union's national officer, Andre Wilkinson, said that the restructuring would leave many youth workers with a pay reduction. "If the council decides to do this, it looks likely that we'll ballot for industrial action," he said.
