In its response to a Department for Education and Skills consultation onyouth work contestability, the Community and Youth Workers' Unionblasted plans to move away from local authority-provided services.
The union said the plan "flies in the face of the evidence" and would"take youth provision back to its 19th century position - fragmented andmarketised".
Doug Nicholls, head of the union, said: "The introduction ofcontestability will change the fundamental nature of youth work and itsrelevance to the most excluded young people."
The consultation on the Statutory Guidance on Clause 6 of the Educationand Inspection Act, Positive Activities for Young People ended on 30March.
