Although clause six of the bill currently places a specific duty on local authorities to provide "sufficient recreational" and "sufficient educational" leisure-time activities for 13- to 19-year-olds, providers are now pushing for a distinct mention of youth work (YPN, 8-14 March, p4).
Tom Wylie, chief executive of The National Youth Agency (NYA), last week told Young People Now's Youth Matters conference that references to youth work in the bill are "a bit slender" and the legislation "is not as sharp as we would like it to be".
He added: "We would like to see youth work mentioned specifically on the face of the bill. And The NYA has been working with our friends in the House to get an amendment."
