Organised by trade union Unite, it will take place on Saturday, 19 June.It was originally intended to be in protest against plans by CoventryCity Council to reduce the terms and conditions for part-time youthworkers and outsource some parts of the youth service to the private andvoluntary sector.
But Doug Nicholls, Unite national officer for youth and communityworkers and the not-for-profit sector, said the rally has taken on extrasignificance. "What is happening in Coventry is the tip of an icebergfor youth work and public services. This has turned into a nationalrally against the unnecessary plans to break up the public sector," hesaid.
"Few people yet realise that the cuts the government is proposing for arange of services for young people are seriously endangering the nextgeneration. Young people are bearing the brunt of the recession and theservices they most need to pull through are being hit hardestfirst."
