Campaigners hold rally in defence of youth services

1 min read Youth Work
One thousand youth workers, young people and politicians gathered in Solihull on Saturday (12 February) to campaign against the cuts to young people's services.

The rally was organised by the union Unite and supported by a range of organisations including CYP Now.

Speakers at the event included Liberal Democrat MP for Solihull Lorely Burt and Labour MP for Bolton West Julie Hilling.

A survey complied by CYP Now and Unite ahead of the rally revealed that the majority of local authority youth services faced cuts of between 20 and 30 per cent.

Doug Nicholls, Unite national officer for community, youth workers and not-for-profit sector, described the cuts being made to youth services as "historically tragic". He added: "It’s worse than in the 1980s when the government sold off the family silver. Now they’re trying to sell off the family gold – our public services."
