Youth services: Threat of closure hangs over Barcode cafe

1 min read

Weston-super-Mare town cou- ncillors will, on 13 March, decide whether to extend the lease on the Barcode Cafe, which opened in October 2005 (YPN, 18-24 January 2006, p17).

Up to 700 young people visit Barcode each week. The venue offers facilities for discos, a chill-out centre and karaoke, as well as acting as a base for youth visits.

It also provides opportunities for young people to play and listen to live music.

The cafe demonstrated the idea of a youth facility run commercially. But some town councillors are concerned about the higher than anticipated cost of running the cafe, which is funded predominately by local ratepayers.
