Youth services: Surrey youth clubs face closure threat

1 min read

The proposal is part of a council-wide cost-cutting programme, designed to steer youth workers away from traditional centre-based work, freeing them up for outreach work. Three youth centres will be built in place of the centres that are closing.

Surrey County Council consultation documents say young people in Surrey are less attracted to local authority youth centres and prefer to engage with youth workers in other locations. But this is based on the "experience" of youth workers, not consultation with young people.

The closures will mean the loss of 7.5 full-time or equivalent posts from youth services, saving 255,000. It will be part of a programme of 73 redundancies within Surrey's children and young people's services.
