Surrey to retain youth workers

Youth Work
Surrey County Council has rejected claims that up to 100 youth workers could lose their jobs under plans to transform youth provision in the county.

The union Unison said that up to 100 youth workers will see their jobs go and "scores of services slashed" as part of the council's plans.

But Garath Symonds, assistant director for young people at Surrey Council, said that frontline youth work posts and youth centres were protected under proposals to create an integrated youth service. "We currently employ 183 frontline staff across a range of services working with young people. The plan is to increase that figure to 208," he said.

Twenty-two managerial roles and 38 administration posts are currently earmarked to be lost under the restructure, he added, but none of the county's 32 youth centres faced closure. He said that the council was committed to providing "high-quality open-access youth work" to young people from all backgrounds.
