Surrey seeks to boost number of male childcare workers

1 min read Early Years
Surrey County Council has launched a campaign to drive up the numbers of men working in childcare settings.

The number of men working in childcare in the area currently stands at 3.5 per cent, only a fraction above the national average of two per cent, causing concern that children lack the presence of male role models in early life.

The authority’s campaign is based on a series of interviews with men already working in the profession, who talk openly about their experiences in the role.

Stephen Liddle, a playworker at Allsorts After School Club in Weybourne, said: "In today’s society there are a lot of single parents. I think it’s a good idea for me to be there. Children can look up to you, like a second dad really."
