Youth Services: Directors require service knowledge

1 min read

Jane Haywood, chief executive of the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC), has called for a "communications campaign" to improve the understanding of the workings of youth services.

In its Youth Matters: Next Steps document, the Department for Education and Skills said it would instruct the CWDC, Lifelong Learning UK and other members of the Children's Workforce Network to consider what skills youth workers need to carry out the "lead professional" role, which all authorities are expected to introduce next month. The council has also been asked to put in place "flexible learning packages" to equip staff for the challenges.

Haywood said that this may involve a specialist qualification, although she had concerns that there were already "a large amount of qualifications and national standards". The CWDC will employ an "integrated working manager" within the next three months to help oversee the work.
