Youth service: Black Country trains teens to become youth workers

1 min read

The three-year Youth Workers in the Community project has now completed its second year and most of its 16- to 19-year-old recruits have gained NVQ Levels 2 or 3 in youth work. The paid training programme has been funded by a 1.2m Department for Education and Skills grant.

Twenty-six of the first group of 40 young people on the course achieved NVQ Level 2, while six have also managed NVQ Level 3. Thirty-one of the 39 recruits in the second group also finished the course successfully and similar results are expected with the third intake.

All the teenagers have remained in locally based youth work or related fields. The majority of the young people were previously not in employment, education or training.
