A project in Lambeth aims to help the borough's homeless black and minority ethnic young people by providing accommodation and support from members of the local community. Joe Lepper explores how the scheme, launched by the YMCA, will work.

A rallying cry has been issued to Lambeth's black and minority ethnic community to take part in an innovative scheme aimed at improving outcomes for black homeless teenagers in the area.

Launched by South London YMCA in partnership with Lambeth Council, the year-long Community Hosts pilots involve members of the black and minority ethnic community giving up spare rooms to homeless 16- to 18-year-olds (CYP Now, 31 October-6 November).

Believed to be the first scheme of its kind in the UK, it is being advocated by the YMCA as a safer alternative to hostel and bed and breakfast accommodation, where teenagers can be exposed to criminality, drug abuse and violence.
