NCB Now: Member Focus - Connexions Black Country

Our pioneering scheme: "We are in the final year of a successful three-year pilot apprenticeship course, Young Leaders in the Community, which gives young people - many from the not in education, employment or training category - the chance to gain NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in youth work.

It follows a growing need for youth workers and provides their first step on the career ladder.

Developed by Connexions Black Country, ContinYou and the Bordesley Institute, the scheme is attracting interest from other Connexions partnerships as well as from the Metropolitan Police.

Ninety per cent of the first 39 young people who completed the course went on to full-time jobs, further training or back to college. It's been really rewarding to see young people from diverse backgrounds, who are socially excluded or hard to reach, develop their skills and confidence."
