While the past few years has witnessed a welcome expansion in the amount of youth work done in the UK, a less welcome side effect is that demand for youth workers is outstripping supply.

The extent of staff shortages varies from region to region and is particularly acute in areas with high housing costs, such as London, although most agencies struggle to find enough qualified workers. A large part of the problem comes down to cash, according to the two main unions for youth workers, Unison and the Community and Youth Workers' Union, which both argue that salaries need to increase.
