Youth justice: Sector chiefs welcome split for youth justice

A spokesman for the new department said the move was to create a "strategic approach" in policy for young people.

Mike Thomas, chair of the Association of Youth Offending Team Managers, said: "There have been calls for some time for the Youth Justice Board (YJB) to come out of the Ministry of Justice and move across to the now defunct Department for Education and Skills but it wasn't going to happen. This is a step in the right direction."

Paul Cavadino, chief executive of crime-reduction charity Nacro, said the decision would create a joined-up approach to how young people are treated.
