Many youth justice professionals have expressed support for the YJB to be sponsored jointly by the Ministry of Justice and the Department for Education and Skills. A spokeswoman for the ministry said: "We will be the sole sponsor of the YJB." She said ministerial responsibilities have not been finalised.
The government department opened its doors on 9 May as a result of the Home Office splitting in two. Youth justice is now under the remit of the new ministry, leaving the Home Office free to concentrate on terrorism.
Rob Allen, an ex-board member of the YJB, and director of the International Centre for Prison Studies, King's College London, said: "It's disappointing if they are not at least prepared to consider co-sponsorship.
