Youth Justice Board reveals replacement chief executive

John Drew has been made the new chief executive of the Youth Justice Board (YJB).

He will take up the post from 1 January 2009. Drew is currently directorof housing and community services for the London Borough of Redbridgeand, until recently, was chair of the borough's youth offending andyouth crime prevention teams. He also led the establishment of itschildren's trust.

Drew will replace Ellie Roy, who was ousted by YJB chair Frances Done,over a perceived conflict of interest between Roy's job and her marriageto Phil Wheatley, director-general of HM Prison Service (CYP Now, 14-20May).

Drew said: "I look forward to building on the YJB's considerableachievements and helping it shape the future of youth justice in yearsto come."

Paul Cavadino, chief executive of crime reduction charity Nacro, said:"John Drew will have the support of everyone working to reduce youthcrime in tackling the YJB's key challenges. The most important is theneed to reduce this country's excessive use of custody for children."
