The Youth Justice Board (YJB) has announced the appointment of John Drew as chief executive.

Drew will take up the post from 1 January 2009 and is currently the director of housing and community services at the London Borough of Redbridge.

His responsibilities include adult social care and adult education, leisure, housing, and payments and benefits.

He will replace Ellie Roy, who was ousted by the board’s chair Frances Done, over a perceived conflict of interest between her job and her marriage to Phil Wheatley, director-general of HM Prison Service (CYP Now, 14 -20 May).

Until recently Drew was chair of Redbridge's youth offending team and youth crime prevention teams and led the establishment of Redbridge Children’s Trust.

Drew said: “I am thrilled to be joining the YJB at this time. The YJB has overseen much change and progress since its inception.
