Policy: Youth organisations call for criminal justice bill changes

1 min read

The bill was published on 25 June and includes proposals to review the use of antisocial behaviour orders (Asbos) on young people after one year, extend the use of conditional cautions to 16- and 17-year-olds, and introduce a single community order for juveniles.

Paul Cavadino, chief executive of crime-prevention charity Nacro, said the bill had good and bad proposals and that Nacro would be lobbying for changes.

"We support most of the measures," he said. "But we want to see an amendment introduced to delete punitive measures on conditional cautions and added restrictions on the use of youth custody. We will be pressing the Government to amend the bill on these lines."
