Spending time in prison does not look great on your CV, but it does qualify you for some things in life, such as getting the attention of young offenders who have committed serious crimes.

Gifford Sutherland, a 33-year-old ex-offender convicted for importing drugs, is putting this to good use at Newham Youth Offending Team, where he is leading its I Can scheme for prolific young offenders.

The group of six 14- to 17-year-olds have been involved in firearms offences, robbery, grievous bodily harm and drug abuse. They have also been through Newham's offender behaviour programme and subsequently reoffended.
