Youth Justice: Fear of antisocial behaviour linked to orders

The area covered by the Metropolitan Police has the highest percentage of people who think there are high levels of antisocial behaviour in their area, at 29 per cent. Greater London is also near the top of the table for issuing ASBOs, with 448 given between April 1999 and December 2004.

Other areas that issue a large number of orders, such as Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, also have above average ratings for perception of antisocial behaviour.

Richard Garside, director of the Crime and Society Foundation, said it was unlikely the trend was solely the result of a greater amount of antisocial behaviour. The regions that are very keen on ASBOs talk up the problem, and they talk up what they are doing about it, and they create an amplification effect, he said.
