Youth Engagement: Courses need to be advertised to NEETs

1 min read

The LSC called for improved information sharing between Connexions, youth workers and training providers in a meeting with government offices and representatives from Connexions in Birmingham last week.

Trevor Fellowes, LSC director of learning support, said the meeting had been held to identify ways in which agencies could reduce the number of 16- and 17- year-old NEETs from the current total of 110,000.

"The problem is not that there aren't any learning courses, but that we need to get better at information sharing," he said. "We need to find out what young people's aspirations are, and we need to feed this information through to the colleges and training providers so courses can be made known to young people." At the end of this month the Department for Education and Skills publishes its latest statistics relating to 16- and 17-year-olds in education and training.
