Central government departments must radically improve joint working to halt the ever-increasing rise of young people not in education, employment or training (Neet), according to youth sector professionals.
Their warning came as figures released in Parliament last week chart the rising number of disengaged and unemployed young people.
The statistics uncover a wide variation between the regions. In the North East, almost 23 per cent of 16- to 24-year-olds are Neet, while in the North West the figure is more than 21 per cent.
By contrast, the figure stands at just over 15 per cent in the East of England, the South East and the South West. In London, 17 per cent of 16- to 24-year-olds are Neet.
