The 100,000 Home Office-funded, two-year Active Faith, Safer Communities project, will be extending the alliance's work into the boroughs of Hackney, Lewisham, Newham, Southwark and Lambeth. This began last week with an event for faith and voluntary groups to launch the Hackney Peace Alliance.
The Reverend Nims Obunge, chief executive of the Peace Alliance, said: "There are a lot of young people who can play an effective role in fighting crime. The project will be based on an extension of our three key principles: local ownership of the project by communities and young people; partnership working; and collective responsibility."
The Peace Alliance will join up with a paid worker to develop the project across the boroughs and engage with young people in schools and youth clubs.
