Youth Centres: Carlisle teenagers establish own club

The Club opened at Stanwix Community Centre last week and was set up by five 13- to 16-year-olds with the aid of a 2,500 grant from Cumbria County Council.

The teenagers decided to set up the club after attending meetings of the Stanwix Community Forum. They suggested creating a youth club as a possible answer to reducing problems such as graffiti and vandalism in the area.

The funding has enabled the group to buy equipment including record decks and games. The young people have also created posters to promote the club.

Irene Ruddick, a personal adviser at Connexions Cumbria, said: "It's absolutely wonderful what they've done."
