YOUTH CENTRES: New centre helps tackle vandalism

Part-time youth worker Yvonne Crowther created the Cardinal Community Enterprise on the Cardinal Estate in Leeds a year ago. Since then vandalism and grafitti on the estate has gone down by 70 per cent, according to West Yorkshire Police's community involvement team and the housing services.

"When I moved here I asked kids on the estate what they wanted because they had nowhere to go," said Crowther. "We found an unused office building, which the housing service let us have as a centre.

"It has been an enormous success. The police and housing services have told us that vandalism and graffiti on the estate have almost disappeared."
