Residents want young people off the streets, but what happens when they don't want youth centres on their doorsteps either? Graham Readfearn takes a look at what clubs have been doing to improve community relations.

The youth work fraternity can usually brush off this kind of repetitive complaining from adults. But what happens when the complaints get so serious that they threaten to close the centre down completely or ruin expansion plans?

Residents living near the Wanstead Youth Club in the London Borough of Redbridge demanded the centre at the end of their cul-de-sac be closed down. Teenagers were making too much noise and being blamed for criminal damage. Some residents said the centre was a haven for drugs use. In a desperate attempt to quell the complaints, staff even took to escorting club members out of the cul-de-sac at kicking out time.
