Youth Music has pumped 14m into 20 schemes across England targeting socially deprived young people. Graham Readfearn looks at projects set up through the initiative to assess the benefits for teenagers.

For generations, kids have locked themselves in their rooms and created a wall of sound between themselves and every adult that dared come close.

It is this love of music and making a racket that the Government's Youth Music initiative has turned into a working model to re-engage angry, bitter, disaffected, bored or just plain disruptive youngsters.

As musician and Youth Music tutor Pat Devlin says: "Some of the kids really want to get down to the nitty-gritty of making their diaphragm move: some just want to be pop stars."

He admits he had to set a few ground rules on cigarette smoking, spitting and swearing at the Horizon Youth Centre in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.
