SPORT ACTION ZONES: In the zone

5 mins read
Sport Action Zones pumped nearly 7m into 12 deprived areas to get more people active. Graham Readfearn finds out how the zones have helped young people and whether they will survive changes to lottery funding.

That's when Joe Bell started his job as a manager of the local YouthWorks programme, a scheme aimed at getting more young people to play sport.

Since then, he's persuaded Cumbria County Council to let the project have a couple of previously uninhabitable semidetached houses in the middle of two main housing estates. With the help of some young, and old, volunteers, these houses have been transformed into a youth base and a magnet for local young people.

From the new base, Bell runs scores of sports schemes for young people living on the two adjoining estates. He has linked up with local sports clubs, schools and volunteers who organise sports days and courses, which have included boules, football, go-karting, crazy golf, baseball and touch rugby.
