The teaching of music is renowned for the positive effects it can have on even the youngest of children. Sally Whittle reports on projects making the right noises

From 3.30 in the afternoon, the school hall at Brightlingsea Infant School in Essex is filled with the sound of 75 children banging drums, playing keyboards and blowing trumpets. But after a few raucous minutes, the children attending the Kids Days after-school club settle into a memory game, playing increasingly complex melodies to one another.

Until recently, Kids Days wouldn't have been able to afford this kind of activity. But that all changed when the club was chosen to take part in Come and Play, a Youth Music-funded scheme that hopes to provide music workshops for children from disadvantaged backgrounds in 47 local authorities.
