YMCA England's Partnerships in Prisons project works in prisons all over England to support young offenders and help them on release. Last year, it worked with 2,600 individuals. At Hindley, the YMCA will work with 200 young people.
Advice is given on life skills such as housing and budgeting. The YMCA works with other agencies and prison staff and will help the 14 to 21-year-olds find employment and training.
Pete Crossley, co-ordinator of Partnerships in Prisons, said: "This builds on the work we are doing within other establishments in the Northwest.
Research shows the significance of resettlement in reducing re-offending rates. The YMCA recognises the importance of resettlement and has been working on this for the past decade."
