Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Piers Jester, play specialist, Great Ormond Street Hospital

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I try to encourage normal play for the children while they are in hospital. I also help children through their treatment by explaining medical procedures using special toys, models, books and photographs.

Describe a typical day. I find out which children are coming on to the ward and check how other children on the ward are. If I have to meet a new child I will try to find out about them so we can establish a rapport. Throughout the day I provide fun activities.

What other agencies, and who else within your own organisation, do you have to work with? Medical staff treating the children will ask me for feedback on how a child is coping and feeling as they know it can be easier for a child to confide in us. I also work with physiotherapists, teachers and social workers.
