Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - PC Lindsay Collins, saferschools officer, Greater Manchester Police

1 min read
What do you do? Two of us look after five schools. We work from 8am to 4pm, covering the routes to school, watching children at the shops and seeing them inside the gates. Specific incidents can take all day to sort out. We give talks and arrange courses.

What's the most rewarding aspect of your job? When a young person, whomay have looked like they were heading for problems, comes and tells methat they are doing well and staying out of trouble. Then you feel youmay have made a difference. I think it's important to be a role modeland a benign authority figure.

What was the highlight of the past week? I did the Gay Pride marchrecently, and a young woman came up and said: "Oh PC Collins, I rememberyou." I recognised her from the school and she gave me a really positiveresponse.

What is the hardest aspect of your job? Taking a child from its parentsin co-operation with the local authority. Also, when a sex offence isreported and we have to tell the parents of the victim.
