Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Julian Brooks, Sure Start family worker for Contact a Family

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I work with any family that has a disabled child under four in two Sure Start projects in south London. I focus on supporting the parents, for example by giving them information about their child's condition, giving benefits advice and helping parents with education issues, such as getting a statement of special educational needs.

I also offer emotional support and run support groups and workshops. In the school holidays we run leisure activities for the whole family.

Describe a typical day. I go out on home visits to families, get to know them, and follow up if necessary. I meet professionals on families' behalf, write letters and reports, help parents fill out benefits reports, and chase up housing issues for them; either getting their home adapted or helping them transfer to more suitable accommodation.

What other agencies, and who else within your own organisation, do you have to work with? I work with health, education, housing and social services, as well as other voluntary agencies.
