Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - George Stobbart, deputyprincipal, Valley Road Community Primary School, Sunderland

1 min read
What do you do? My responsibility is for community development specifically related to extended schools. It involves pastoral care of children, putting business plans together, managing childcare in the school's pre-school nursery and after-school holiday childcare, family learning and adult learning. In other words, everything but teaching. It also covers community use of the school, such as our community diner, which is open to the public all day.

What was the highlight of the past week? It's been half-term, so thehighlight has been our holiday childcare scheme. It is well used now notonly by local children but from the surrounding area. We're in a part ofSunderland that's viewed very poorly by other areas so to get peoplefrom outside to use our facilities is a big bonus.

What qualifications do you need to do your job? There wasn't onespecific qualification that was needed for my position but what's usefulis a certificate or diploma in community and youth work and furthermanagement qualifications in education or the public sectorgenerally.

How did you start working with children? I first went into a youth clubas a volunteer and thought I could do it better than the people who werepaid to work there.
