Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Caroline Chalke, children's work, development advisor, YMCA England

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I provide support and advice to local YMCAs on children's work. This includes responding to government consultations, providing advice on quality issues and good practice, developing policies and representing YMCA England at national events.

Describe a typical day. My office is based in the nursery at Welwyn Hatfield YMCA, so I start the day with a noisy breakfast with the children. Then it's meetings with staff, parents and outside agencies, advising local YMCAs, and even finding a lost hamster. I could end the day helping at one of the after-school clubs if they're short of staff.

What other agencies, and who else within your organisation, do you work with? Other YMCAs, Ofsted, 4Children and the DfES.

How did you end up in this job? I trained as a nursery nurse and took the job as childcare director for Welwyn YMCA, working alongside the builders and opening the day nursery. We went on to expand the nursery and develop out-of-school care off site. That was 15 years ago. I also carried out some project work for YMCA England, and three years ago I took on my current role.
