Workplace: Course Preview - Young people now: key issues inadolescence

1 min read Youth Work
This one-day course from the Trust for the Study of Adolescence is pitched at those who may be new to working with the 13 to 19 age group or anyone who simply wants to take time out to reflect on issues of adolescence.

Trainer Jayne Hellett explains that the course starts with some music: "It's a very powerful trigger. We then work in pairs to get people to reflect on their own adolescence and about what's changed and what's similar for young people today - it's a nice introduction."

A true or false quiz will focus on some of the realities behind the hoodie image and bring out facts about issues such as alcohol, crime, mental health and living arrangements.

"We'll be looking at the increasingly flexible nature of adolescence," explains Hellett. "There will be film, including both the Harry Enfield character Kevin and some real 'Kevins' talking about their lives. There will also be some input on theories of adolescence. We'll consider areas such as autonomy, maturity, sexuality and personal identity."
