NCB Now: Workshops empower disabled young people in the transition to adult life

1 min read
The Council for Disabled Children (CDC), based at NCB, has been involved in a six-month workshop programme working with young people with complex physical and/or communication needs who are making the transition through further education to independent adulthood.

The Sussex-based programme was part of Realising Independence Through Education (RITE), a collaborative initiative between the DARE Foundation (Disability and Rehabilitation Education) and the ACE Centre (Aiding Communication in Education) in Oxford.

The workshops involved students, parents, carers and representatives from local statutory and voluntary bodies, working together to identify solutions to the hurdles that can occur at this critical stage in life.

Helen Wheatley, senior development officer at CDC, was involved in the workshops and will now help each team disseminate their project outcomes on a national scale.

Each workshop team chose its own theme: Through My Eyes is a collection of images and statements, aimed at stimulating discussion and challenging stereotypical views of disabled people, while Carnival Encounter looked at how to make the wide range of art and dance facilities in Brighton fully accessible and inclusive.
