Extended schools are a central part of the Government's plans forimproving children's services. To help implement this vision ofintegrated children's services based in schools, Derby City Councilcreated five extended schools development officer posts.
Each officer covers a separate part of the city and the council iscurrently looking for one to cover schools in the Chaddesden, Derwent,Oakwood and Spondon wards.
The area is leading the development of integrated children's services inthe city and so the officer's role in encouraging the growth of extendedservices will be a crucial one.
Janet Lawrence, extended schools strategy manager at Derby City Council'says the idea behind the role is "to take pressure off schools and maketheir ideas for extended services into reality". To do this, the officerwill set up and support management groups made up of schools and partnerorganisations to help develop plans for extended school services, carryout consultations with families and identify gaps in services. Theofficer will also have the job of securing funding for extendedservices, be it a budget for a homework club or money to build a sportsfacility.
