Workforce: Patchy knowledge of sector reforms

The children's workforce doesn't know enough about Every Child Matters, according to research.

A comprehensive survey reveals that more than half the sector thoughtthey did not know enough about the Government's reforms of children'sservices to do their current job. And two-thirds said they would welcomemore information.

The Department for Education and Skills asked researchers from BMRBResearch to gauge the impact of Every Child Matters on workingpractices. Professionals from local government, health services'schools, youth justice, childcare and voluntary organisations weresurveyed to measure awareness of key reforms.

The research found that knowledge of the agenda was highest among localgovernment workers at 90 per cent, but lower among childcare workers at69 per cent and school staff at 70 per cent. Overall, two-fifths ofpeople surveyed claimed it was difficult to move between jobs withinchildren's services.
