Workforce: Standards focus on safeguarding

New standards for the children's workforce will state that all professionals must be able to spot signs of possible child abuse and know how to deal with them.

The Common Induction Standards for Children's Services were unveiledlast week in draft form by the Children's Workforce Development Council(CWDC). They will be reviewed during the next few months before cominginto force in September.

There is a strong emphasis on safeguarding with the draft standardsstating that workers in every setting should be able to "describe signsand indicators of possible abuse and neglect". They must also befamiliar with key legislation and national guidance in relation tosafeguarding.

Jane Haywood, chief executive of CWDC, said: "We want to ensure thisresource is both relevant and user friendly. It is critical theworkforce shares its feedback."
