Workforce: Rethink over the introduction of common induction standards

1 min read
Common induction standards for the entire children's workforce will take much longer to develop than expected and are likely to be piloted before being fully rolled out, it has emerged.

The Children's Workforce Development Council had hoped the standardscould be in place as early as this September. However, feedback from aconsultation has led to a rethink and the council is meeting today (22March) to discuss the way forward.

Baroness Estelle Morris, chair of the council, admitted at a 4Childrenconference last week that there were "big issues". The standards set outthe main things new entrants to the children's workforce will beexpected to know, covering a wide range of topics from health and safetyto multi-agency working. The consultation on draft standards suggested a12-week timescale.

While the standards have been welcomed in principle, there is concernamong childcare organisations about their complexity (Children Now, 8-14March).
