Workforce Development: Youth workers could have to qualify for licence to practice

The framework is being devised by the Lifelong Learning UK sector skills council, an employers' organisation due to officially launch next month that will steer workforce development within youth work and related sectors.

Central to Lifelong Learning UK's work is the development of core standards for the profession that all higher education institutions will need to adhere to by April 2007, and a framework of credit-based qualifications.

These will lead to a "licence to practice" and a registration number, initially awarded by the Institute for Learning, the professional body for post-16 teachers, although a separate body may be set up for youth work.
